REVIEW: SQL Performance Tuning by Peter Gulutzan and Trudy Pelzer

"SQL Performance Tuning"

by

Peter Gulutzan and Trudy Pelzer

This is a generic database developers best practice guide book, covering eight major database types (e.g. SQL Server, Oracle et al) and provides an indication as to whether that technique improves performance or not. However, it doesn't indicate which database performed better - only a star rating as to whether it was an improvement and a note when a particularly feature isn't supported by a particular product. As such, this is more tuned for database developers who work with a number of different database products and where the database code is ported from one database product to another. A useful reference book none-the-less.

Pros

  • Generic - it compares the same queries and data against eight major database management systems

Cons

  • Too generic - only database specific where a feature is not available

Overall

Ideal for programmers and developers who deal with applications running on different database management systems.
